Who are we?
The ministries of YWAM Chiang Mai are as diverse as the YWAMer’s who make them happen, and have an impact locally, regionally and internationally. Due to the strategic location of the city of Chiang Mai, we are a hub for many of YWAM’s Transnational Ministries, such as King’s Kids, Frontier Missions, and Create International. As YWAMer’s we seek to be unified in purpose and values, strategically linking and sharing resources to support each other’s vision. We exist “To Know Him And to Make Him Known.”
What does it mean to join staff with YWAM Thailand?
Being a part of any organization implies both benefits and expectations for both the individuals and the organization. As YWAM Thailand staff, you are supported by the leadership and greater YWAM Thailand community in your city, and across the nation. Being part of YWAM means that we (YWAM) function in a way which is accountable to the staff, and the staff to YWAM. If you are part of an official YWAM Thailand ministry, then you have a YWAM Thailand ministry leader who is your primary leader and support person. In turn, your ministry leader also has a local YWAM Thailand leader and leadership team who supports him/her, as well as a network of all the ministry leaders in the city who support one another. It means that you have a spiritual covering by your local YWAM leaders. It also means that you are included in all communication that gets sent out from the YWAM Thailand National Office, Regional Leadership Team, and local leadership team which hopefully helps you feel more connected with the larger body of YWAM in Thailand and what they are doing, informs you what YWAM International is communicating and focusing on, reminds you of YWAM’s values and purpose, and hopefully the communications encourage you.
As part of YWAM Thailand you are invited to attend local events, corporate prayer and worship times, regional conferences, an annual national conference, and other special trainings that are offered. We also provides a service to all new staff called the Culture and Language program (C&L).This program provides a coach or advisor that periodically meets with new staff during their first 12 months in the country to help them identify their longer-term ministry goals, helps them put a plan together for how to develop the language and culture skills necessary to achieve those goals, and provides general assistance and support for people with all the difficulties that transitioning to Thailand can have.
Basically, being part of YWAM Thailand means you have a very large support structure and family here to help you. It gives you an opportunity to help other YWAMers here, as well. It’s a big part of what makes us a YWAM family and it helps us not to live in independence but rather in commitment to team (family) and to our YWAM values.
Are there any requirements?
In order to be official staff with YWAM Thailand, we ask several things:
- Successful completion of a YWAM DTS
- Submit a YWAM Thailand staff application and be accepted by a YWAM Thailand ministry leader who you will be working with or be accepted into the C&L program
- Pay monthly staff fees/savings (each location is different
- YWAM Chiang Mai’s monthly fees are 350 Baht per non-Thai adult, plus 400 Baht savings monthly to help cover your cost of attending the National and Regional conferences – and 50 & 300 baht, respectively, for Thais)
- Attend an annual conference and local meetings, when possible (again, each location is different – we have monthly meetings in Chiang Mai)
- Join the C&L program for your first 12 months to achieve the goals appropriate to gain the culture and language skills needed for your intended ministry
Culture and Language Program
The Culture and Language (C&L) program is for all foreign (non-Thai) staff for their first 12 months in the country. The intent of the C&L program is to help our staff successfully transition to living and working in Thailand, understanding the culture, and being able to speak sufficient Thai language to get around and perform their ministry. Every person is different in what their level of mastery of the Thai language needs to be, depending on the extent to which they will be working directly with Thais.
The leader of our C&L program in Chiang Mai interacts with all of our new staff on a weekly basis in order to help people with questions and problems, provide resources, and to help guide and encourage them in achieving their culture and language goals. The program is meant to be a blessing for new staff here and has no cost. To become staff with YWAM Thailand, you can either join (and be accepted by) an existing local ministry, or you can simply join staff as part of the Culture and Language Program. If you come in under a ministry, then that ministry leader becomes your YWAM covering and accountability. If you come in under the C&L program only, then the C&L leader becomes your YWAM covering and accountability. Either way that you choose to join YWAM Thailand, you would work with the C&L program to help with your transition, working to accomplish your language and culture goals. You can participate in the C&L Program and still contribute to a ministry at the same time. We encourage that. We caution that you try not to do too much ministry during this phase as it often leads to burnout in the first year or two, and it can tempt people to focus too little on learning language and culture. If you have any further questions, please contact us via the contact page.
What YWAM events do you have?
YWAM Chiang Mai is made up of about 100+ staff in 10+ ministries and 7 training schools spread across the city. YWAM Connect events are intended to give all of the YWAM staff and ministries in the city (and even some friends of YWAM) an opportunity to connect with fellowship, food, worship, and a time of ministry or sharing with one another. It is a monthly meeting set aside for mutual encouragement, where we connect with God and each other and seek to grow together as a family.
What is the Application Process for YWAM Staff Transferring to Thailand?
The YWAM Thailand Staff Application form can be found at: http://www.ywamthai.org/assets/pdf/yt-longterm-app.pdf. If you are looking to move to Chiang Mai from another YWAM location, it is not necessary to fill out the entire YWAM Thailand Staff Application. We just ask that you complete pages 1-7, as well as page 15, which is a Release Form. However, each individual ministry leader may require additional background information. Please contact them directly for more information. Email your application to your YWAM Thailand ministry leader (if you already know who that will be) or contact our admin office and we will let you know how to proceed.
